OCCUPATIONAL FIRST AID (QQI Level 5)
The Health & Safety Authority (HSA) now recognises the PHECC First Aid Response (FAR) training course as meeting the needs of occupational first aid. The HSA currently recognises both the PHECC FAR and Occupational First Aid (OFA) learner certificates as meeting the needs of OFA in the workplace. At a future date however, the HSA will only recognise the PHECC FAR award.
During the transition period, we can provide both Occupational First Aid and First Aid Response training courses but would advise our clients to move to the new standard.
Occupational First Aid (QQI Level 5) Course Description
This 3-day course covers all of the Occupational First Aid requirements for the workplace as outlined by the Health and Safety Authority. The specific requirements for first aid provision at work depends on several factors including the size of the workplace, the numbers employed, the hazards arising, dispersal of employees and access to medical services. The presence of trained first aiders in the workplace provides peace of mind to staff and helps to reduce the effects and seriousness of any accidents or injuries that may occur.
This QQI (FETAC) Level 5 course will provide the learner with the knowledge, practical skills and confidence to give effective life support, diagnose and treat injuries or illness, and maintain care and comfort of an injured colleague until the arrival of medical assistance. Also included is training in the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and the administration of aspirin for cases of a suspected heart attack.
Course Content/Topics Covered
Each of our Occupational First Aid courses is delivered by an Order of Malta Training Services instructor registered with the Occupational First Aid Assessment Agent (OFAAA). Our instructors have years of practical experience in front line emergency care and tutoring all levels of learners.
Our approach to training incorporates both practical and interactive learning, giving the participants the ability to put theory into practice and to cope with real-life situations that may arise in the workplace. This course is classroom based with each theory session followed by skills demonstration and scenario-based training.
An assessment takes place at the end of the third day. There is a practical and theoretical element to the assessment. Participants complete a short-answer examination paper and undertake three skills assessments. In order to be successful, learners must achieve a mark of 50% or greater in each element of the assessment.
All successful candidates will be awarded a QQI (FETAC) Level 5 certificate which is valid for 2 years. Pending the issuing of this certificate by QQI, learners will receive a certificate of completion from Order of Malta Training Services which is acceptable as proof of course completion. Occupational First Aiders must attend a 1-day refresher course within 2 years and 90 days in order to maintain their certification
